Letterkenny Crematorium plans given the go-ahead

by Louise Doyle

DONEGAL is to have its first crematorium after planning permission has been given the go-ahead for its construction in Letterkenny.

Applicant and funeral business owner Michael Morning has been given permission to build the facility within a proposed new funeral home in Carnamuggagh.

In his application to Donegal County Council, Mr Morning cited how he believed it may “perfect sense” to have a crematorium in Letterkenny because, as present, many people have to travel to Cavan to have their loved ones cremated.

The issue of the lack of burial plots in Donegal, and calls for a crematorium in the county have been discussed at previous municipal district and plenary council meetings.

The development has been given the go-ahead subject to 20 conditions, including that it is to be carried out and completed in accordance with the plans and particulars lodged in respect of the proposed application.

Prior to the commencement of development, the applicant must submit for the agreement of the Planning Authority and Senior Executive Chemist a preliminary Air Quality Assessment which shall be carried out as close as possible to the subject site for a suitable period of time, and which includes a significant portion of the solid fuel burning season and late spring summer months.

A detailed noise study and air quality impact assessment, with recommended remediation measures if required, shall be carried out by a competent air and noise environmental consultant within three months of the development being in full operation, and at any other times as may be specified by the planning authority.

The applicant has also been asked to use ‘best practicable means’ to prevent/minimise noise and dust emissions during the construction and operational phases of the development, through the provision and proper maintenance, use and operation of all machinery all to the satisfaction of the planning authority.

Furthermore, the hours of operation will be from 9.30am to 6pm Monday to Sunday.

The funeral home, which already has planning permission, has capacity for 60 car park spaces.
