LETTERKENNY Credit Union has issued a warning after members were targeted in a high-risk phishing scam.
In a post on social media, the credit union revealed that members had received text messages claiming they were entitled to a €1,500 energy grant.
However, the messages included a fraudulent link requesting online banking PIN digits and other personal information.
After clicking the link, some members also received phone calls from fraudsters posing as the credit union. During these calls, scammers claimed there was suspicious activity on the account and asked members to provide a One-Time Passcode (OTP).
The credit union warned that fraudsters can generate a genuine OTP by attempting to log in using stolen details, making the scam appear convincing.
In one reported case, a member became suspicious, ended the call and contacted the credit union directly, preventing any financial loss.
The credit union stressed that it will never ask for a member’s full PIN, online banking details or an OTP over the phone.
Members who receive suspicious messages are advised not to click on any links, not to share personal information or security codes and to contact the credit union directly.
