Letterkenny councillor has major concerns over Active Travel proposals

RADICAL plans to transform the appearance of some of Letterkenny’s busiest roads with a network of paths and cycleways could backfire, it has been claimed.

Donegal County Council could spend in the region of €6 million plus on a variety of Active Travel schemes in the town.

These are designed to primarily encourage walking and cycling for everyday short journeys with the intention of improving health, creating safer communities and reducing environmental impacts.

But one local councillor says he has “huge concerns” about the possible consequences of proceeding with the proposals as they stand.

Under the proposals, many roads will be narrowed considerably in order to allow for the construction of new pathways and cyclepaths.

Some of these will be shared, while others will be separate, with some of them being two-way.

Cllr. Ciaran Brogan fears that the town – which is already facing gridlock at times – will see even more traffic related issues if the Active Travel plans are implemented.
