THE funeral took place yesterday morning of the very well-known Letterkenny man Alphonsus Surpless (82) passed away in his sleep on Thursday night.
Funeral mass for Alphonsus, affectionately known as Phonsie, was celebrated by his nephew Fr Joseph Gee from Manchester in the Church of The Irish Martyrs, followed by burial in the family plot in All Saints Church Burial Ground, Newtowncunningham.
Mass was con-celebrated by Fr Joe O’Donnell, Fr Willie McMenamin and Fr Brian Quinn PP. A very keen cyclist, Phonsie was never seen around the area without his trusted bicycle which took him all around the county and regularly came into the Donegal News office on the High Road to say hello.
A deeply religious man, Phonsie spent much of his time fund-raising for different causes, such as the work of Sr Josephine Walsh raising money for Housing Aid Bosnia amongst many others.
As a cyclist, Phonsie also campaigned a lot for road safety.
