A Ukrainian woman living in Letterkenny, who was forced to flee her war-torn country, has been shortlisted from more than 100 entries in a new writing competition established by An Post, in association with the Irish Book Awards.
The entry by Olga Kitik is in with a chance of winning the ‘New Voices Writing Prize’. It’s a category that focuses on new and established Ukrainian writers living in Ireland. Using no more than 1,000 words, they were invited to compose an original short story, essay or poem in either English or Ukrainian, describing their traumatic experiences of flight and exile.
Five others have been shortlisted – four based in Dublin and one in Galway. They will attend the An Post Irish Book Awards ceremony at the Convention Centre, Dublin on November 22 where the overall winner will be announced.
An Post CEO David McRedmond has praised all those who have participated.
“It is exciting to be able to use the platform of the An Post Irish Book Awards to introduce new writing. Even more so to share the work of Ukrainian writers as they navigate their experiences of war, exile and working to build new lives here.
“Our hope is that the works of these writers leads to a better understanding of Ukraine and contributes, in some way, towards the healing of those hurt by war,” McRedmond added.
