Letter to the Editor: What is the point of motor tax?

Once again Donegal County Council, in its wisdom, has decided to fill potholes on a small stretch of roadway outside St Bernadette’s School, College Farm Road, while spending copious amounts of money on streets and roads that don’t require any maintenance or resurfacing.

For years the residents of College Farm Road have sought much needed road resurfacing in areas that have been utterly neglected for over 30 years plus.

The attached pictures taken should give everyone, including the council, a fuller picture of how neglected this part of town is.

Residents of College Farm Road are annoyed by the decision of Donegal County Council to simply fill in potholes close to St Bernadette’s School rather than fully addressing the issue.

One road that was developed some years ago has a lien on it, owned by a vulture fund based in Dublin.

Another roadway has no tarmacadam surface on it whatsoever and is full of potholes.

The same council that has given planning permission for the development for apartments and expansion of school facilities in close proximity hasn’t, within its remit a simple solution to ongoing infrastructural difficulties that College Farm Road residents have.

We have to contend with ever increasing traffic to the school because of its expansion, even though the road leading to the school is only fit, in part, for single vehicle traffic at most with sightlines and egress obstructed for most residents including those attending St Bernadette’s.

While the Council has been made aware of our increasing difficulties, nothing has been done.

What is the point of motor tax, or even local property taxes, when all is on offer is a few shovel full of tarmac?

In response, a spokesperson for Donegal County Council said: “Please note some of your pictures are showing roads that are not in Donegal County Council’s control. We have fixed the sections of road that are in DCC control and will continue to do so as and when repairs are required.”
