LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Active Travel plans won’t solve traffic problems in Letterkenny

It has taken me some time to put this letter together but, now that my blood pressure appears to have returned to more normal levels, I believe I can express my opinion without use of my extensive repertoire of expletives which would have ensured it definitely not be fit for publication.

It would seem that many of our councillors are infrequent visitors to Letterkenny and its environs. If they were, they would surely have noticed what can be charitably described as minimal usage of the existing active travel projects.

Maybe they have somehow failed to notice the intolerable traffic congestion in and around the town, particularly on the Ramelton Road, frequently backed up as far as Tara Court and beyond.

It now seems they believe the best they can do for the town is to further increase the traffic problems. As an aside, I am sure that they gave urgent consideration to ensuring that the adoption of these plans would never impede the progress of ‘blue light vehicles’.

Instead of this decision, which will not benefit the many but will appease the few, why not spend a little on improving both the Port Road and the Main Street, both of which presently have the appearance of being unloved, or the adoption of CCTV in the town centre due to the frequently reported rising crime rates in the town?

Or, perish the thought, banning parking on one side of the Main Street, thus making it both more traffic and pedestrian friendly?

As I have often remarked to my better half, God help anyone foolish enough to have a heart attack on a Thursday afternoon on the Main Street.

I note that one of our venerable councillors remarked that, “our grandchildren will thank us for this”. If projections from the expert scientific community re climate change come to fruition, our grandchildren will be wondering why active flood defences were not put in place instead.

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I voted for some of these people in the past, be assured that will not be happening again.

Yours,
