Leo Varadkar has announced he is stepping down as Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader.
Speaking at Leinster House, he said that being Taoiseach has been the most fulfilling time of his life.
“My reasons for stepping down are both personal and political.
“I believe the re-election of this three party Government will be the right thing for the future of our country,” he said.
Resigning as Fine Geal leader immediately, Varadkar said he will remain as Taoiseach until a new party leader is elected after the Easter break.
His successor will have a full two months before the local and European election in June.
Reacting to today’s news, Buncrana Cllr Jack Murray said it would be right and proper for this announcement to trigger a general election.
“For the Taoiseach to step down, while stating that he is not best placed to assist his party colleagues in being re-elected, is an acceptance of the failures of his government.
“The next Taoiseach should be elected with a mandate from the people.
“Political change is desperately needed now.
“Let the people have their say,” Cllr Murray concluded.
