Learner driver tests positive for cannabis at Garda checkpoint

By Diarmaid Doherty

Gardaí in Letterkenny last night arrested a learner driver after they failed a roadside drug test and tested positive for cannabis.

And while that person was being dealt with at the Garda checkpoint, another vehicle approached before carrying out a U-turn and driving away.

When it was eventually stopped by Gardaí, they discovered the driver was disqualified from driving and the vehicle was seized. The driver will now face a court appearance.

The incidents come on what promises to be a busy weekend for Gardaí in Donegal.

They have promised a high visibility presence in our towns and villages and along our roads this Bank Holiday weekend.

On Saturday night Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit arrested the learner driver at a (MIT) Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoint after they failed the roadside oral fluid preliminary drug test, testing positive for cannabis.

A Garda spokesperson commented: “Arrive alive this Bank Holiday Weekend and help ensure that other road users do too by making responsible decisions.”
