Some of the leading names in local sport are endorsing the I COACH KIDS regional conference series taking place at ATU Letterkenny on Thursday, September 1st, and at ATU Sligo on Friday, September 2nd.
The conference series will provide an opportunity for coaches, teachers, and parents to hear about the most recent information on child and teenage-centred coaching, to improve coaching skills to put the needs of children and teenagers first, and to develop an inclusive culture and environment.
Donegal senior football team captain and Head of Sport, Michael Murphy, professional boxer, Jason Quigley, Raphoe Boxing Club coach, Gary McCullagh, and Falcarragh Gymnastics coach, Natasha McLaughlin, are encouraging coaches from all sports that work with children, teenage boys and girls to go along to listen to the experts next week.
Guest speakers for the conference series will be the co-founders of the I COACH KIDS movement, Sergio Lara-Bercial and Nicolette Schipper van Veldhoven. Sergio Lara-Bercial is a Professor of Sport Coaching at Leeds Beckett University (UK) and will introduce the I COACH KIDS pledge – the ten golden rules to create positive developmental experiences for children in sport. He will offer practical examples of how to bring the pledge to life in day-to-day coaching.
Nicolette Schipper van Veldhoven is a professor of ‘Sport pedagogy, especially towards a safe sport climate’ at the Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands, and will introduce the compass for coaching children and how to can use it in coaching practice.
Looking ahead to the conference series, Michael Murphy said: “If you are coaching children or teenagers and you’d like to add some skills to your tool kit, then come along and hear from two world-class speakers in the area of coaching kids in sport. I’d encourage coaches to register as soon as possible online.”
Education and Training Coordinator with Donegal Sports Partnership, Maggie Farrelly, said: “We at Donegal Sports Partnership are very fortunate to be involved in supporting Sport Ireland Coaching to bring this conference to the North West. Coaches from Donegal, Sligo, Derry, Tyrone, and Fermanagh from all sports can hear first-hand about effective coaching practices to keep young children and teenagers engaged in sport while supporting their development and retaining them in their sport. We would encourage those who haven’t registered yet for this conference to do so soon as places are filling up with only a week to go.”
The cost per coach is €10.
