FOR the bulk of both the Kilmacrennan Celtic and Lagan Harps under 16 squads, this Saturday’s Champions League Final offers the opportunity to end their schoolboy careers with some silverware.
Those leaving the under 16 grade will now move on to Youth and Adult football.
However, Saturday’s final at the Moss (Kick-off, 11.30 am) allows the chance for the victors to sign off on their time as a schoolboy footballer on a high.
It’s an exciting time for Kilmacrennan Celtic, who will also play in the Under 14 Champions League Final next week.
To have two teams reach finals is impressive, especially considering the size of Kilmacrennan, and their under 16 manager Hugo McDaid says he has invested a lot of time in the team since they were young children.
“Every now and again you just get a good crop of players through,” McDaid explained.
“We have worked hard with them since they were four years of age and the boys have put in a lot of work.
“They’re playing GAA as well and we’re thankful that we have a good relationship with Termon.
“It’s the last hurrah for the bulk of our team. This will be their last game at schoolboy level and I really hope they go out on a high.”
Lagan Harps manager Glenn Gallagher is hoping it will be third time lucky for his side in Drumoghill this week.
The Manor side narrowly missed out on the league crown to Cappry Rovers, while some of the squad also tasted defeat in the Seamus Coleman Cup Final last month.
“It’s been an up and down season to be honest,” said Gallagher, who combines managing the under 16 team, with playing for the Lagan senior side.
“We came second in the league and then a couple of weeks ago we were beaten in the National Cup final with our 2002s.
“We lost a final last year, so we’re hoping it will be third time lucky.
“In those other games, we just haven’t had that wee bit of luck that you need, but hopefully we will get it this week.”
