Killybegs manager Mark Boyle says they’re under no illusion about the task ahead as Kilcar prepare to make the short trip to Fintra on Saturday in the Raidio na Gaeltachta Senior Football Championship.
“Kilcar are probably among the favourites for the championship and they’re just up the road so they know the scenario with us in terms of the men we’ve lost and injuries we have, they might be rubbing their hands at the thought of coming to us,” said Boyle.
Michael Molloy’s Kilcar have already one win under their belt, while Killybegs lost their opener against Termon.
“Really that is one we shouldn’t have lost. We didn’t take the goal chances that came to us on the day and it cost us, but Kilcar are a different proposition, they are one of the favourites, we’ll do well to get something from the game,” the Killybegs manager explained.
That said, Boyle says his men will not be found wanting in terms of effort and they will be determined to take the victory.
“Look, championship football is all on the day, anything can happen. We know we are playing a very good side, but the boys will give it their all and we’ll just see what happens then.”
Before than Boyle will sweat over the availability of Ciaran Conaghan who has sustained an ankle injury with one or two other minor injury concerns as well.
Meanwhile, even though they won their opening championship encounter against Naomh Conaill without too much difficulty, Kilcar manager Michael Molloy is expecting a much tougher encounter when they make the short trip to Fintra this weekend.
“It’s a local derby and I wouldn’t expect anything less from Killybegs than for them to really put it up to us. There’s no way we’ll be thinking this will be easy, it will be anything but that,” said Molloy.
Thankfully, he says, he is looking forward to this weekend’s game with a full squad to choose from, with no injuries or absentees expected.
“We should have everyone available and we will be going out in search of a win that hopefully will help us on our way to qualification. It’s a long time since we won the championship and that has to be our aim, but for now we have to make sure we qualify from the group and after that, we can take it from there.”
