Kilcar v Glenswilly the centerpiece of club championship weekend

Patrick McBrearty

GAA – RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta Senior Football Championship
Preview by Chris McNulty

MICHAEL Murphy and Patrick McBrearty go head-to-head in a battle of Donegal’s sharpshooters in Towney on Sunday.

Ace scorer Murphy and the in-form McBrearty have been lighting the touchpaper so far in 2013 – and now their swords clang in their opening Championship clash.

It is a game that brings together two teams who are seen as a pair with serious and realistic aims of winning Dr Maguire.

In a group that also houses St Michael’s, it will be a minefield that will be the survival of the fittest and a big name will fall.

John McNulty would love a full panel to select from, but he has some trouble with Matthew McClean rated as ‘very doubtful’ and Patrick Gallagher and Mark Sweeney ‘touch and go’.

Ashley Carr, Noel Hegarty and Aeonghus McFadden are missing from last year’s squad and in a game that is a repeat of a 2011 semi-final it will be interesting what develops.

Although the potent threats of Murphy and McBrearty will be stationed at either end, it has the look of a game that could be low-scoring.

This is the game of the weekend. Kilcar are the form team in Division 1. Hammered by St Eunan’s on Good Friday, they haven’t lost since and presently sit at the summit in the standings.

Glenswilly, too, have had rich League form and are top of Division 2. Relegated last year, they are back under the stewardship of Gary McDaid, their Championship-winning manager from 2011.
