The Setanta senior ace is managaing the Under 21s, with the assistance of 2013 Nicky Rackard Player of the Year Danny Cullen, and he was delighted with his team’s narrow win.

Seven of this team started the 2013 Donegal SHC final defeat by Burt: Mark Callaghan, Chris Bonner, Shane Gallen, Brendan Tourish, Justin Browne, Conor Gallen and Berard Lafferty.

“We have had this bunch of lads coming through from the Feile and we’re expecting big things of them,” Campbell said.

“We were expecting to win a Minor title and we didn’t, which is just one of those things. We came out and put in a big effort.

“We don’t have a big pick out there, so everyone needs to pull together. We’re delighted to get the win.

“We are in a good situation with a young team in that we’re contesting across the board. A lot of those boys played in the senior final. The future is bright hopefully.”

The game-clincher was Thomas McMenamin’s goal ten minutes into the second half.

Campbell said: “It was a very close game. I said to Danny at half-time: ‘Whoever gets a goal will win this.’ Thankg God we got it.

“We knew St Eunan’s would throw everything at us in the first half. We just wanted to get in at half-time and get a good talk with the lads.”

This was the first running of the Donegal Under 21 Hurling Championship – and Campbell has hailed the decision.

He said: “It’s great to have an Under 21 Championship because there is a huge jump between minor and senior.”
