Another amazing year at Karen Murphy Speech Drama & Communication, I can safely say our most creative to date.
Our approach to drama is a very holistic one here in Karen Murphy Speech Drama & Communication. We welcome new young creative minds at a very early age and walk with them in their journey to adulthood. Last year the most incredible people, students touched my life in the most creative of ways and elevated our classes and what we do to a whole new level.
I am so proud of my amazing young students who have completed over 11 years with us and now continue their journey to further education and University armed with incredible skills for life and work, included in this bunch is my own son Harry. Well done everyone!
Young adults never cease to amaze me and I truly love watching children begin the journey in junior classes, struggle through early teens and then blossom in senior years. I can’t tell you how lucky and privileged I feel, when I see and share in their successes.
Parents often refer to what we do as much more than tutoring drama, we provide space and creativity and opportunities for all our students to grow into their future. One parent recently said of his child being part of our team that it was the best decision they ever made as a family. That’s what it feels like to us here, every child is part of our extended family!
Many occasions during the year we were incited to join in community activities . The students and myself enjoyed a story telling afternoon with TV3 personality Lucy Kennedy, while many of the students also were given the opportunity to use their own skills and “story boards”, which they designed and created.
Story boarding is a novel and creative way of teaching children how to use visuals as part of a presentation, and later in the year many students use this skill in their Public Speaking Examinations with the Irish Board of Speech & Drama.
Oakfield Park in Raphoe, a wonderful landscape of parkland, woodlands, lakes and formal gardens asked us to create a magical experience for children and their families during the Christmas season. This was a great opportunity for the students to communicate what they had learned in a real life setting and was well received by management and visitors alike at the events.
So now we begin another year with new faces and new journeys. Young minds that will gain great knowledge and communication ability for the day they set off for their first day at college and face the world alone for the first time.
We are looking forward to the New Year ahead.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR YEAR AHEAD
Secondary School programmes began this week with Step up to Secondary a programme designed to compliment secondary school induction week for 1st year students, followed by Transition Year Team building and preparation for Mini Company programmes alongside the various Enterprise Educational Boards. Prefect and Monitoring Training will also feature this week. Primary School workshops and classes will commence in September also. Montessori drama all resume over the next few week.
Speech & Drama Classes – Most of our classes are now fully booked for the coming terms 207/18 however we do have some exceptions – please do follow through with a call to discuss further. We operate a waiting list and would be delighted to answer any questions you may have in relation to Speech & Drama.
The exam system we work with is through the Irish Board of Speech & Drama which offers focus and progression as young people get older so that by the time they are 17-18, the exam syllabus will have facilitated them in gaining a huge understanding of the richness of literature (verse, prose, and drama), and how words can be brought to life and to their full meaning through vocal and physical interpretation.
Our syllabus demonstrates HOW your voice gestures movement and facial expression contribute to your ability to communicate with sincerity conviction and meaning. We encourage young people to understand through practical application, how for example, a pause in just the right place in a piece of drama can make an audience laugh, or cry or simply understand.
