POPULAR North West Rally driver Garry Jennings has said he “probably would never survive” another crash like the one he was involved in at the Cavan Stages Rally on Sunday after he and his navigator Brian Hoy miraculously escaped death.
Jennings and Hoy suffered serious injuries after their Ford Fiesta Rally2 car skidded off the road, hitting several trees, before tumbling down a bank.
After receiving life-saving care from their competitors and medics at the scene, the Fermanagh duo were transferred to Cavan General Hospital for treatment for the injuries they sustained in the crash.
Jennings – who won the Donegal International Rally in 2012 and 2015 – sustained several breaks to his leg, his shoulder and his sternum. At the time of going to press, he was still in hospital in Cavan, where he was undergoing treatment for blood in his lung.
On Sunday evening, navigator Hoy was transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he underwent surgery on a broken leg. He also received treatment for a broken arm.
Jennings said the medical care they received in the immediate aftermath of the crash from their competitors likely saved their lives.
“We were both stuck in the car,” the Kesh driver explained.
“It took them half an hour to get Brian (Hoy) out and an hour to get me out. Cathan McCourt and Barry McNulty and Declan Boyle and his navigator (Paddy McCrudden) were on the scene and they looked after us.”
