JASON Quigley keeps on rolling.
The Finn Valley ABC boxer moved into the quarter-finals of the World Championships following a unanimous 3-0 win over Scotland’s Aston Brown in Kazakhstan.
Quigley is the fifth seed in these Championships and will face the fourth seed, Zoltan Harsca from Hungary in Wednesday’s quarter-final.
Two days after defeating Indian Vijender Singh, Quigley was in superb form to defeat the Scot in the last sixteen bout at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Culture and Sports in Almaty.
Quigley was out sharp in the opening round, but Brown came with a volley in a blood curling second round, in which Quigley just held sway.
The Irish and European champion closed out in the third round to take another step up the ladder.
“Every boxer here is top of their country and you have to be on the game for every fight over here to go the whole way,” Quigley said.
“In the second round, he came out very strong.
“I expected that because I knew that I’d nicked the first round. I thought that I’d done enough in the first.
“He was obviously going to come at me and going to try to push the fight because he’s a round down. That’s what he done.
“I stayed with him and showed him who the boss was. I showed him my power. I changed my game plan half-way through the fight, which I’m delighted I did and which I’m delighted is there in the tank to do.”
Tunisian judge Mohamed Braham scored the second round in Brown’s favour, but Quigley got the nod of the Sri Lankan and Kazakhstan judges and eventually took a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 victory.
Quigley had never faced Brown before, but had become familiar with him in recent weeks.
“He’s sleeping two doors down from me. I see him warming up, I see him getting ready, he said.
“It’s weird walking by a boy you’re going to meet in the World Championships.”
Quigley is now one win, nine minutes, from a World Championship medal when he faces the Hungarian, Harsca, an Olympian, in Wednesday’s quarter-final.
