A PLACE in the quarter-finals of the World Championships is at stake this morning in Almaty in Kazakhstan when Finn Valley boxer Jason Quigley faces Aston Brown in a last-sixteen clash.
Twenty-two year old Quigley, the current Irish and European middleweight champion, got his Championships started on Saturday with a 2-0 majority decision win against Indian Vijender Singh.
Now he faces the Scottish middleweight Brown with a place in the quarter-finals the carrot that dangles before the Finn Valley AC hit man.
Quigley sustained a cut to his head in the opening round on Saturday in what was his first competitive outing without a head guard.
Having been examined by the ringside doctor, he was given the green light to continue.
Quigley won 30-26, 30-26, 28-28 and now faces Brown, who was tenth at the European Championships in June. Brown was beaten by Romanian Bogdan Juratoni, who was slain by Quigley in the European final in Minsk.
Brown was beaten by Irish boxer Conrad Cummings in the World Series of Boxing earlier this year. Quigley had to overcome Cummings on his way to the Irish title.
The Ballybofey man’s routine won’t alter and it’s very much a case of one fight at a time.
“As everybody knows, I’m an active boxer and I never take anyone for granted,” he said.
“Every fight is a final.”
