It's going to be chilly and mild with the chance of a storm too

DONEGAL is not set for a white Christmas, but wrap up because its going to be cold… and wet.

There is a risk of a sharp frost on Christmas Day, St Stephen’s Day and again on New Year’s Day but emergency services in Donegal are not expecting much snowfall, although there may be some on higher ground.

Met Eireann had issued a status yellow weather alert for heavy rain earlier this week. There was heavy flooding in parts of north west Donegal and parts of the Finn Valley on Monday.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Mr Charlie Kerry, Senior Executive Engineer with Donegal County Council, said the “unseasonably mild’ weather will prevail over the holiday season.

“The outlook is unseasonably mild with rain, hail and sleet, but no heavy snow,” he said.

“We’re expecting frost on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, next Sunday and again on New Year’s Day, but snow is not predicted over the holiday period,” he added.

The council has 21 lorries on stand-by for gritting to cover the roads in Donegal.

“We get a five day weather forecast from Met Eireann but every day we get a more accurate outlook of what to expect,” Mr Kerr said.
