Is Donegal the festival capital of Ireland?

WHILE Spain may be known as Europe’s festival capital, with events like the tomato-throwing festival in Bunol and Valencia’s Las Fallas, Donegal stakes a strong claim as Ireland’s own festival hub. As summer arrives, festival fever grips Donegal with a vibrant line-up of events set to delight residents and visitors alike.

From July 4-15, the Lennon Festival in Ramelton kicks off with Moya Brennan, The Voice of Clannad, performing on opening night. Music enthusiasts can enjoy acts like Robert Mizzell, Jimmy and Claudia Buckley, and a Bruce Springsteen tribute band. On July 7, the RNLI Soapbox Derby promises thrilling races, while family-friendly events like a car treasure hunt on July 8 lead up to a spectacular fireworks display on the 15th.

The 37th Earagail Arts Festival, from July 13-28, transforms Donegal into a world-class stage. This festival celebrates local and international talent, featuring circus arts from Catalunya, capoeira from Bahia, and diverse musical performances from blues to traditional Irish tunes. Events span unique venues, from village halls to beaches.

Dunlewy’s Féile an Earagail, running from late July into August, marks its 39th year with interactive walks, singing, dancing, and a céilí mór. The Burtonport Summer Festival, from July 19-27, offers live outdoor music, children’s events, historical walks, and sports, showcasing Irish culture and heritage.

One of the North West’s largest festivals, the Mary from Dungloe International Arts Festival, runs from July 27 to August 5. Celebrating its 57th year, it features performances by Daniel O’Donnell, Ronan Collins, Dominic Kirwan, Susan Mc Cann, The Shamrock Tenors, ABBA Sensations, David Craig Band and more. The festival culminates in the crowning of the Mary from Dungloe, a young woman dedicated to promoting Irish culture and charitable causes.

From August 1-5, Rathmullan’s annual festival promises music, competitions, and entertainment. The tenth annual Letterkenny Busking Festival on August 17 offers a rich variety of street performances, with over €1,000 in prizes.

Finally, the Dunfanaghy Jazz and Blues Festival, from September 12-16, features over seventy gigs across various venues, celebrating jazz, soul, roots, and bluegrass music. This festival provides the perfect cure for the post-summer blues.

With its diverse and exciting array of festivals, Donegal truly stands out as Ireland’s festival capital!

Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss out on your favourite events.
