Irwin leads British Superbikes Supersport Championship

After what can only be described as a spectacular weekend of racing at Knockhill in Scotland by Kilmacrennan’s Rhys Irwin, he moves into the lead of the British Superbike’s Supersport Championship.

Knockhill being the closest circuit for Irwin racing on the British Superbikes Championship calendar it is always a popular one, but this year it threw every challenge at the racers competing from wind, to rain, to a fast drying track in one of the most contested championships of the season packed to capacity with untold talent.

FP1 and 2 on Friday were wet becoming patchy. Rhys got into his rhythm never far from the front. Saturday dawned with grey skies with dropping temperatures and wind leaving difficult set up and tyre choice. With two qualifying sessions due to the large numbers of racers Rhys was pipped for the front row in the last seconds of the session leaving him P4 with 0.9 secs between the top 4 racers.

Race 1 saw a rapidly drying track with a promise of rain, Rhys got a good start to move to the front passing the reigning Champion Kennedy to take a hard fought victory in 1st Place. Race 2 saw driving rain but with the Championship in mind, Rhys raced a safe race and took his Suzuki across the line in 4th place to take the lead of the British Superbikes Supersport Championship.

“I had an unreal weekend, I won here in 2023 so I knew I could do it on a dry track but the conditions this weekend were unpredictable. To beat Kennedy who is one of my childhood heros for the win just means so much to me and then to move into the lead of the Championship is just a dream. I would like to thank the team, this was a hard weekend, and I especially want to thank all my supporters that travelled over to Scotland to support me but not forgetting those who continue to help me that weren’t here enjoy the lovely Scottish weather. This would not be possible without all the help.”

Looking forward to the next round in two weeks’ time. Rhys can be watched live in action on TNT4.
