DANNY Tourish was in red-hot form on Saturday to win the National Colleges super-heavyweight title at the National Stadium.
The hammer-handed Tourish, represented Letterkenny Institute of Technology, has recently returned to the ring – and the big Twin Towns BC man turned in a stunning display of ring craft on Saturday to outclass Jack Morrisey.
Tourish had originally entered at heavyweight, but without an opponent there he stepped up to the 91+kgs division.
Morrisey had no answer to the punching power of the 25-year old Ballybofey native.
Indeed, Dublin IT boxer Morrisey was perhaps fortunate to go the distance. Tourish gave him a count in the second round and another in the third on a day when he was the runaway victor to take the title back to the Twin Towns.
Raphoe ABC livewire lightweight Dennis Lafferty had no joy in the 60kgs final. The Ballindrait man lost out to Stephen Benson (Tralee IT) on a split decision.
Lafferty was involved in the fight of the day, a contest that rocked back and forth all the way from first bell to last.
Having come into the final on the back of a fine run of form, Lafferty could be confident and he set about his task well, taking the first round 29-28.
However, it was all up for grabs when Benson took the second 29-28 and it was Benson who edged the thrilling contest by earning the decision in the final round, also 29-28.
