Irish college speaks out against online posts

AN Irish language college in west Donegal has said it is seeking legal advice after “shameful” images were shared online promoting a public meeting in the building.

The images, which appear to be created using Artificial Intelligence, show two armed and masked men outside Coláiste Mhuire in Loch an Iúir.

The images were being used to promote a meeting against local International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) accommodation.

In a bilingual statement online, Coláiste Mhuire shared how it was shocked to see the images being shared online, as they do not reflect the views or practices of the college.

“The news and images posted online about our college in the past few days are both sad and shameful.

“Our organisation stands firmly against racism in any form,” a spokesperson for the college said.

The college, which is non-denominational, spoke of its commitment to fostering an environment where diversity is valued and inclusion is practiced. It also said it provides resources and training to support ongoing development in cultural awareness and anti-racist practices.

“As an organisation, we are committed to standing up for those who experience discrimination and using our influence to promote positive change.

“Our commitment to equality and justice is unwavering, and we strive every day to build an environment and society where everyone can grow and flourish.”

At the end of the statement the college said it has sought legal advice regarding the images.
