Investigations continuing after two drown at Malin Head

Members of the RNLI were involved in the rescue operation off Malin Head.

INVESTIGATIONS are continuing this morning into the circumstances surrounding a double drowning tragedy in Inishowen.

A 16-year-old boy from Derry and a man in his 60s from Donegal lost their lives when their 15ft fishing boat got into difficulty yesterday afternoon off Malin Head. A third man is recovering in hospital after being rescued. He clung to a buoy for several hours before being pulled from the water.

It is understood the boat left the area around midday with three people on board and that calls for help were heard by people on the shore later in the afternoon.

It is not known what caused the boat to capsize.

The search was co-ordinated by Malin Head Coastguard and involved two RNLI lifeboats from Lough Swilly, the coastguard helicopter and a number of local boats.
