FIANNA Fail’s Martin McDermott from Glengad in Inishowen is being called the “wee man with the big vote” after the newcomer topped the poll in Inishowen with more than 2,000 votes.

Even the 38 year-old father of two was surprised thinking he might take around 1,200 or 1,300 while canvassing.

He did express surprise that Fianna Fail topped the poll in light of recent criticism but was adamant that Fianna Fail was always a good party of the people.

“I has thought if I got 1,200 votes I would be in with a chance of taking a seat. I would have strong ties with Deputy Charlie McConalogue. I feel Fianna Fail is a party I can be part of and help with the betterment of Inishowen”.

Cllr McDermott polled 2002 first preference votes. The quota is 1,600. He was the only one of the 18 candidates to be elected on the first count.
