CLLR Dessie Shiels has confirmed that he is seeking election to Dail Eireann in the forthcoming 2016 General Election.
Cllr Shiels said that Donegal badly needs an Independent TD centrally located in Letterkenny who will deliver for all of the county.
“Letterkenny is central to a prosperous future for all of Donegal and as a gateway town with City potential it should have at least one representative at National level. I am very confident that on this occasion the electorate will back a central candidate in Letterkenny for the overall good of the County, especially where that candidate has entered politics for the right reasons and not for personal gain or status or to prop up political party interests. I have received huge support and encouragement to put my name forward for this election. There clearly is a large Independent vote ready to come out for a real change in Donegal politics in 2016 and I am very much looking forward to an enjoyable and successful election campaign,” he said.
A member of Donegal County Council since May 2014, Cllr Shiels said that he stands for moral, principled, ethical politics.
“We have had far too many career politicians for years who did not ever actually contribute to the running of this Country at National level but were merely there to make up the numbers in Dail Eireann and follow the party whip. I don’t do slavish loyalty to political parties and I am only interested in the very serious business of doing what is right for Ireland and right for Donegal and in effecting real legislative change at National Level for the common good. If given the opportunity by the Donegal electorate in 2016 I will be the kind of public representative that Donegal people have wanted for years,” he said.
Cllr Shiels will be holding an election launch evening shortly.
