Impressive Donegal canter past Down

Down 1-12 Donegal 2-25

Donegal are safely through to the Ulster Championship quarter-finals after proving much too strong for 14-man Down at Páirc Esler today.

Declan Bonner’s team made a fast start to the game but Down improved and they trailed by only a point after 19 minutes.

However, Donegal outscored them by 1-9 to three points over the remainder of the first half with Jamie Brennan scoring the goal, while their point-taking was superb.

Brennan was a replacement for Michael Murphy who went off with an injury in the 29th minute.

HT: Down 0-8 Donegal 1-15

Caolan Mooney scored a goal early in the second half for Down and Shaun Patton had to be alert to make a good save from Ryan McEvoy.

Gerard McGovern was sent off for a high tackle on Michael Langan, and Donegal were always in control with an extra player.

Donegal were nine ahead by the 53rd minute and they were never in any danger with Patrick McBrearty adding a second goal in the 61st minute.

Bonner’s side cruised to victory and they will now take on Derry on July 11 in MacCumhaill Park.
