MAJOR issues impacting Donegal people which were to be discussed at Monday’s meeting of Donegal County Council had to be abandoned for the second week in a row due to disruption in the Council Chamber.
The January plenary meeting was abandoned on Monday leaving important issues in Iimbo.
The meeting will now be held on February 21 at 11am, four weeks after the original date due to ongoing disruption caused by Cllr Frank McBrearty (see pages 14 and 15).
Councillors have failed to discuss even the first item on the 35 item agenda. Monday’s meeting was in progress for around 10 minutes before being adjourned for councillors to discuss legal action against Cllr Frank McBrearty.
Items on the agenda include road improvements, education, access for people with disabilities to Donegal beaches and flood prevention. Mica also featured on the list.
Cllr Johnny McGuinness’s co-option on to the council has been delayed twice. Cllr McGuinness, the son of the late Donegal Councillor Bernard McGuinness was not able to be co-opted onto the Council to fill his late father’s seat due to the postponement of the meeting.
In housing, coiuncillors were to discuss the approval of a development of 45 social housing units at Chapel Road, Dungloe, while Cllr Albert Doherty had submitted a motion calling for the refurbishment of 130 derelict houses and for them to be used as family homes.
The controversial variation of the County Development plan in respect of the wind energy policy was also up for discussion.
The council previously amended the motion to ensure that wind turbines must be set back a distance of ten time the tip height from residential properties, and further progress on the framework is now delayed.
Other important issues included Cllr Micheal Naughton’s call for a hybrid Leaving certificate option but this motion is now out of date as Education Minister Norma Foley has already confirmed that the traditional format will proceed.
Mica also featured on the agenda with Cllr Frank McBrearty asking for the names of Council housing estates that have been “cored” and the number of council homes that have had samples taken for testing, and a timeline of the results.
Council members were also set to discuss authorisation of Council representation at the St Patrick’s Day events in America.
