Illegal seal pup cull fears

Concern has been raised after a mutilated seal pup was found near dunes close to the car park in Falcarragh beach.

Photographs supplied to the Donegal News show the carcass of the seal has a possible bullet hole wound and is missing head and tail.

A spokesperson said: “Many people, including kids with pets, use this area of the beach just next to the car park and such a despicable act means now the dead seal carcass is both a health hazard and traumatising to any kids who use this popular beach.

“After talking to a locals on the beach, it is well known locally that freshwater anglers illegally cull seals in the nearby Ballyness Bay where there is a colony of seals, and who knows how many are illegally murdered and mutilated each year

“While we accept it is difficult to prevent such horrific wildlife crime, increasing public awareness is important.”
