Hylda Culbert says she is “hanging up her Boots”! The popular Letterkenny woman has vacated her post at the Main Street branch of the Pharmacy and was the subject of a special retirement reception last Thursday where colleagues, family, friends and customers gathered to acknowledge her contribution to the store.
Standing in front of the No7 stand, from which she sold many a product over the years, she expressed her sadness at leaving after twenty-five years, Boots, she said, was an institution. “And so am I!,” Hylda quipped.
She spoke of the team she had worked with – “great colleagues and manager” and the friends she had made while employed there.
Among the attendance at the retirement reception were members of her “wonderful family” including her father, Charlie, daughter, Lisa, and brother, Cathal.
“My late mother, Margaret, always said to go out on a high.” And that was what she was doing.
Speaking afterwards, Boots representative, David Barton insisted that Hylda would be a “big loss” to the store and to the community she had served.
“People would come in and ask for her by name and if she wasn’t there, they would say they’d come back another day. “We’ll not replace her. We can’t replace her.”
A ‘Flood’ of congratulations was extended to Hylda along with a bouquet of flowers, a cake, and glasses of champagne – non-alcoholic – sipped in her honour.
And her immediate plans? “We’re going to the races in Galway and then to Lourdes,” daughter Lisa revealed.
It’s likely they may put some money on No 7 in at least one of the races and come up revitalised and smelling of roses….!
