TUVAN throat singers Hunn-Huur-Tu will make their first ever appearance in Donegal early next year with local band Tuath providing support.
The quartet will perform in Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair on March 24. They return to Ireland following a previous sell-out tour.
Huun-Huur-Tu’s style could be best described as profoundly mysterious – a consequence of their traditional, ritual laryngeal chants descending from the Central Asian land of Tuva.
Steeped in Tuvan folklore, the ensemble wears traditional garb and accompanies themselves on string and percussion instruments, playing galloping rhythms that evoke the vast south Siberian steppe. Their tightly structured pieces often imitate natural sounds, so that a song can be a literal representation of a Tuvan landscape.
Special guests on the night will be Gaoth Dobhair’s own Tuath and band member Robert Mulhern told the Donegal News how much he is looking forward to mixing their gaeilge stylings with those of Hunn-Huur-Tu.
Huun-Huur-Tu are very mystical and play traditional Mongolian music,” said Robert.
“When I go back home to Gaoth Dobhair I can feel a certain air of mystery and they love Ireland so I thought bringing them off the beaten track and adding some gaeilge to the mix would be a nice setting for them. So the concert will feature ourselves, Tuath, a bilingual band that dabbles in most genres.”
Tuath will open for the stars of throat singing, the only band opening for them on their entire tour.
Huun-Huur-Tu’s Radik Tyulyush added, “The band is extremely excited about the forthcoming tour of Ireland especially after our sell-out tours in 2018 and 2019.
“We are particularly looking forward to performing for the Irish people who have always shown us a friendly reception.”
