Hundreds turn out in wet weather to support Johnny’s Ranch appeal

By Dionne Meehan

THERE was a powerful show of community spirit in Ramelton on Saturday as hundreds rallied to save their beloved food truck, Johnny’s Ranch.

Owned by local man Johnny Patterson, the award-winning take-away has been operating in Gamble’s Square, in the heart of the heritage town, for the past seven years.

However, when news emerged recently that the local man’s business could face closure after he was issued with an urgent enforcement notice from Donegal County Council, under the Planning and Development Act, it sparked widespread outrage.

In just one week, over 2,000 people signed Mr Patterson’s petition, calling on Donegal County Council to rethink their decision.

And on Saturday, hundreds turned out in the rain to show their support.

Amongst those at the ‘Feet on the street’ protest were Cllr Pauric McGarvey, Cllr Declan Meehan, Cllr Liam Blaney, Cllr Tomás Sean Devine, Cathaoirleach of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, Cllr Ciaran Brogan, Charles Ward TD and Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD.

Commenting on the turnout, Mr Patterson described the support as “invaluable”.

“These public representatives and councillors really do care about the areas they serve,” he said.

“These are the very people we rely on in time of distress.

“They are part of our communities and their work as a community representative is not easy.

“They are our voices and the voices of Donegal and they really do have their communities’ best interest at heart.”

Mr Patterson also expressed his gratitude to his loyal customers and friends, saying that they are the ones who shaped Johnny’s Ranch into what it is today.

“Never did I think in my wildest dreams I’d get that support,” Johnny said.

“I do not take it for granted.

“I appreciate it all and I will never be able to repay the depth of gratitude from each and every person.

“You lifted a person from the gutters and have given them hope, courage and light.”
