A SURGE in social house building in the Letterkenny area will become evident in the coming months with plans for more than 340 new housing units at various stages of development.
Councillors attending last week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District were told that site clearance work for 30 new homes in a €9 million development by Largy Construction at Airde Na Buaile, Oran Hill, Kilmacrennan Road, is underway.
It is expected that the six one-bedroom apartments, 20 two-bedroom houses and four three-bedroom houses will be completed by spring of 2026.
Meanwhile, construction work is continuing on a nine unit development at Killylastin.
Plans for 161 social housing units in Ballymacool are also progressing.
Works have taken place in relation to preliminary site investigation works and a consultant team has been appointed.
In relation to plans for 142 houses off the High Road in Letterkenny, the tender return date for an architect led design team has been extended to October 18.
In addition, the acquisition of a smaller site in Oldtown, Letterkenny has also been completed.
Donegal County Council also has a countywide “turnkey acquisition process” which remains open until September 30, 2026.
The process has been opened to help address social housing needs across the county.
Proposals are being accepted for one, two, three and four bedroom housing units in towns or villages throughout the county, on lands suitable for housing purposes.
In Letterkenny, McHugh Bros (Builders) Limited is carrying out site works at Windyhall, and will provide the council with 21 housing units.
