LAST night, the people of Glenties and surrounding areas gathered to say sorry to pensioner Gerry McDevitt, the local man who was beaten and robbed at his Station House home last Thursday evening.
The 77-year-old was threatened by thieves who stole cash and a firearm. He was left with cuts and bruising and was traumatised by the attack.
Many of Mr McDevitt’s neighbours and friends were part of the 300-strong crowd who braved horrible weather conditions to attend the public meeting, organised by the Glenties Community Action Group (CAG), in the Highlands Hotel.
Residents of areas affected by a spate of burglaries are living in fear throughout Donegal. They feel vulnerable due to Garda cutbacks and the people of Glenties have now decided to take matters into their own hands.
Mr Brian Carr, chairman Glenties Community Action Group, said the incident was yet another example of the increasingly brazen activities of criminals.
