OVER €20,000 has been raised in the space of four days for a Newtowncunningham woman battling Motor Neurone Disease.
Originally from Sligo, Olivia Robb’s diagnosis has led to significant and immediate challenges for her family, emotionally, practically and financially.
Working as a member of staff in Penneys, Letterkenny for the past 30 years, Olivia’s vibrant personality is well-known and adored by those around her.
Described as being a “great” person and an “exceptional” mother to her 13-year-old daughter, the local community has continued to rally around her since her diagnosis.
But with no cure for this horrible disease, as it progresses, Olivia’s journey becomes increasingly difficult.
Now needing constant care, this has resulted in substantial changes to her daily life.
From adapted transport to medical equipment and accommodation for multiple hospital appointments in Dublin, the family now face a huge financial cost.
Speaking to the Donegal News about the fundraiser, Cllr Paul Canning said it is good to see the community coming together.
“What we are trying to do is raise enough money to make their difficult journey comfortable.
“It is a stressful time for the family,” he said.
With a long, difficult journey in front of them, Cllr Canning said the family have many hurdles ahead which come with financial burdens.
Meanwhile, staff in Penneys Letterkenny have been holding numerous fundraisers in aid of their dedicated colleague.
From a ‘Great Penneys Bake Off’ to a 50/50 Lucky Wheel, Olivia’s colleagues have been getting creative when it comes to raising much-needed funds.
With more fundraisers in the pipeline, the staff are currently working towards giving their customers an opportunity to donate by holding a raffle during the midterm break.
