There is huge sadness across the county today following the devastating news of the passing of Paul ‘Diddler’ Dillon.

 

The Newtowncunningham man lost his brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease yesterday. 

 

The father of three, aged just 45, of Ballybegley, passed away in Donegal Hospice surrounded by his loving family. 

 

Paul worked as a butcher in Kernan’s Shop in his home village and was a very popular member of staff. 

 

He was diagnosed with the disease in January of this year. His determination and positive outlook was an inspiration to many.

 

Paul was also an athlete with Lifford-Strabane AC, and having started running 5K’s, Paul progressed to running marathons. 

 

Poignantly, he took part in the Waterside Half Marathon in Derry last month. Surrounded by a team of 15, friends and family took it in turns to push Paul, who used a wheelchair in the last few months, across the finish to rapturous applause.  The fundraiser helped raised more than €8,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

 

Paul, a talented and popular sportsman, was a former player and underage coach at Naomh Colmcille GAA Club.

 

He will be laid to rest on Sunday following funeral service in All Saint’s Church, Newtowncunningham,  at 2pm. A one way system will be in operation. 

 

Paul is survived by his wife, Emma their three daughters Lilly-ella, Heidi and Daisy, his father Tommy, his brothers Gerard, Barry and Raymond, sisters Caroline and Ciara, and wider family circle. He was predeceased by his mother Deirdre.
