The Donegal News sought to get the figure this week but was unable to do get the required information. It was confirmed that 1,023 staff, the largest in the country, will leave the HSE West which covers nine counties stretching from Clare to Donegal.
However, further details were not available for staff retirements across services in Donegal and at hospitals, including Letterkenny General.
The HSE said they would have a ‘clearer picture’ as to the full extent of the planned retirements by the end of February. A spokeswoman said they were developing “contingency plans to deal with the specific difficulties that will arise as a result of these retirements, and will refine these plans further when the numbers retiring are finalised”.
However, Donegal County Council was able to provide the information instantly. The council has confirmed 53 staff will retire before the end of February. County Manager, Mr Seamus Neely confirmed to date, almost half of these employees had retired already representing ‘ a huge loss of experience and skills to the organisation’.
