A DONEGAL County Councillor has voiced concerns about the allocation of housing aid grants for elderly and disabled residents, describing the current funding as “grossly inadequate”.
Independent Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig said the council’s financial commitment to the housing adaption grants has already exceeded the allocation set by the Government for 2025.
He warned that the local authority may soon have to consider pausing the scheme due to a lack of sufficient funding.
“The grant schemes in any case require a major overhaul to resolve many deficiencies,” he added.
“Grant ceilings for each element of works are totally unsatisfactory and do not reflect the double-digit inflationary price increases in construction costs.”
His list of concerns also included the lack of Occupational Therapists for certain works, a shortage of available contractors and the fact that the disability grant does not cover roof repairs, window or door replacement or the provision of central heating.
“This is yet another Fianna Fáil agus Fine Gael government hammer blow to the already troubled housing sector i Dún na nGall.”
The Donegal News contacted Donegal County Council for comment, but had not received a response at the time of going to print.
