LETTERKENNY University Hospital is set to review elective surgeries following a scale back in January. Elective surgeries were scaled back in a bid to tackle mounting bed pressures but are now set to be reviewed in two weeks.
A spokesperson from Letterkenny University Hospital told the Donegal News that they sincerely regret any inconvenience caused to patients and their families by this measure.
“Any patients impacted by the postponement of elective surgeries are being contacted directly,” they said.
The numbers waiting for a bed at the hospital have come down significantly with 20 waiting on trolleys today (Friday). Meanwhile the HSE has said they have seen a drop in the number of people with respiratory infections in the community.
Dr Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer, HSE, said: “The latest data would suggest that the flu season has peaked, and that the pressure from Covid-19 and RSV continues to decline. However, even if this pattern continues, we expect ongoing pressure on the healthcare system from these viruses. I would like to acknowledge the work of the healthcare teams across the country in both hospitals and the community during these past number of weeks.
“We urge ongoing compliance to public health advice, including vaccination against influenza and Covid-19 for eligible groups, as well as the importance of staying at home for people with respiratory symptoms until after they have resolved”.
LUH is appealing to members of the public not to visit the hospital if they have any symptoms of flu or Covid-19 or feel unwell.
Visitors are asked to follow all infection precaution measures including cleaning hands regularly during their time in the hospital and also wear a mask at all times during the visit.
