THERE are no specific bye-laws prohibiting horse riding on greenways, trails or public roads, Cllr Fionan Bradley has been informed.
However, under the Control of Horses Act, 1996, a person in charge of a horse in a public place must keep the horse under control and must not allow the horse to cause a nuisance or to present a danger to person or property.
Cllr Bradley had raised the matter at last week’s meeting of Donegal County Council. He was told that those riding or leading horses on public roads are also subject to the rules of the road.
In relation to horses on beaches, they are not permitted between 11am and 7pm during the months of June, July and August on certain beaches unless they have obtained a licence in advance.
The beaches covered by these bye-laws include Carrickfin, Culdaff, Tra Beg in Downings, Fintra, Killahoey, Lisfannon, Marble Hill, Murvagh, Narin, Rathmullan, Rossnowlagh, Stroove, Bundoran and Portsalon.
