Horgan hopes Harps can survive in top flight

Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan has said that if his team can manage to survive in the Premier Division this season, it will be the most impressive thing the club has ever achieved.

Horgan’s comments came ahead of Friday night’s season opener, a mouth-watering local derby against Derry City, but Harps have only beaten Derry 5 times from 59 attempts – and only once in the league.

“People look at what we have, how we can’t compete with the resources available to the teams with their full-time set ups and they have made us favourites for relegation. In fairness every time we have gone up in recent times we have come straight back down again so we know how tough this is going to be. If we manage to survive in the Premier Division this year, it will be the most impressive thing the club has ever achieved.”

Boosted by the availability of a number of new signings and by news that Kevin McHugh, Michael Funston and Gareth Harkin do not have suspensions to serve, Horgan says his team will not be found wanting for effort when they take to the pitch against Derry.

“I know that will only get us so far in the Premier Division, but the lads know what a big game this is. I know they will go out and give everything they have and we’ll see how that goes.”
