A young Kincasslagh woman has expressed her delight at the response to her recent Christmas food appeal for the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin that will now see several hundred people getting meals thanks to the generosity of people in her locality.
Megan Ward, 25, who works at the Randox Research and Product Development facility in Dungloe, took it upon herself some weeks ago to organise a non-perishable food collection so less fortunate people can avail of meals in the lead up to Christmas.
The Capuchin Day Centre, founded by Brother Kevin Crowley, provides food aid, amongst other services, to those who have no home or are socially excluded in the Dublin area. Megan saw the great work they undertake and decided she wanted to help in some way.
The centre serves breakfast and lunch each day and delivers food parcels every Wednesday.
In addition, the centre has a designated family facility where families can enjoy a meal in comfort and safety.
They provide clothing when available and have shower facilities on site.
Brother Kevin, 87, retired in August of this year.
On Monday of this week Megan was joined by family and friends at Kincasslagh Hall to help get the van packed for the onward journey to Dublin.
At 5am on Tuesday morning she was joined by her parents Adrian and Sheila on the journey to Dublin to deliver the large food consignment to the Capuchin Day Centre.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Megan said she is beyond delighted with the response from her local community towards her chosen charity.
“The van is full of food for the homeless, in fact it’s bursting at the seams,” she said.
Megan confirmed that the amount of food collected will provide meals for hundreds of homeless people in the days leading up to Christmas.
Her initial plan was just to pack up her car and drive to Dublin when it was full.
“No words can really convey my thanks to you all for your generosity and willingness to help others. I had initially hoped to pack my own car with food but now to have a large van jam-packed with food is simply a credit to you all.” she said.
She also paid tribute to The Cope, Dungloe, Supervalu, Dungloe, and Kincasslagh Parish for their assistance collecting food and their generosity.
Megan and her building contractor father Adrian are no strangers to assisting people in need.
In 2017 they both travelled to Haiti where they helped people rebuild their homes and their lives following the devastating 2010 earthquake that killed an estimated 220,000 people and decimated the region.
The Wards spent 10-days in the Leogane area where they assisted the people of Christianville rebuilding and working in local communities.
