THE people of Letterkenny are being encouraged to come out in a strong show of support tonight to hnour the Tidy Towns Committee who recieved the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Town this afternoon.
At the annual SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition ceremony in the Helix Theatre at DCU Letterkenny was announced as the overall winner in the national competition.
It is an accolade that has been much-sought after by the Tidy Towns committee since they first entered the competition in 1959.
Mayor of Letterkenny, Cllr Gerry McMonagle encouraged townspeople to attend the homecoming for the committee which will take place at the Market Square at 7.30pm tonight (Monday).
“This is fantastic news for the town and is a result of years of hard work that have been put in by all involved.”
He continued: “Of course, the person we are all thinking about today is the late Jim McCormick who was the driving force behind the Tidy Towns and really devised the route map to where we are today.”
Cllr McMonagle added: “I would call on the poeple of the town to come out and show their support for the committee.”
