AS Donegal prepares for the summer influx of tourists, concerns are growing over the impact of short-term holiday lets on local housing availability, especially for families struggling to secure long-term rental accommodation.
Donegal councillor Jimmy Brogan has renewed calls for tighter regulation of platforms such as Airbnb, highlighting the growing number of properties being diverted from the long-term rental market in favour of more lucrative short-term stays.
“If you can make a couple of thousand euros a week on a house, you aren’t going to let it out to a family for a couple of thousand euros a month,” he said.
“It has a massive impact on the availability of housing for families to rent.”
