Hilarious comedy in aid of a great cause

The Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey

A PLAY will be held in the Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey, this weekend to raise funds for the local Sean O’Hare Unit which caters for adults with special needs.

The dedicated HSE Players present ‘The Maiden Aunt’, a hilarious production written By Jimmy Keary, in aid of the unit in Stranorlar which accommodates almost 20 residents with an intellectual disability.

When Aunt Gertie comes to stay with Dan and Mary, of course, they feel that they must be entitled to the bulk of her worldly possessions. So they set about convincing Gertie to make her will.

Gertie, however, has other ideas. When Gertie ‘dies’ suddenly without having her will made, things start to get complicated.

What the couple decide to do with the aid of their bachelor farmhand, and their wannabe pop-star son, will have you rolling in the aisles.

The cast includes Danny Quinn (Dan), Georgina Harkin (Mary), Patricia McGlinchey (Aunt Gertie), Tony Casey (John Paul), Suzy McCrory (Caroline), Julie Gillespie (Paula) and Patsy Chambers (Jarleth). And with no expense spared, they have Andy McGranaghan, well-known stand up comedian and HSE staff from Letterkenny, as loveable rogue Francie Gilhooley.

The Sean O’Hare Unit and associated services provide residential, and day services for adults with an intellectual disability. It also provide respite care for both adults and children.

“They are very much part of our local community in Stranorlar and provide a safe therapeutic environment to meet the specialised needs of people with Intellectual disabilities, and to experience a good quality of life,” one of the organisers said.

“The cast of the play work at the Sean O’Hare Unit, and they are raising funds for the clients comfort fund, which ensures the clients have an opportunity to experience extra activities such as outings, social activities and concerts.”

They would like to invite the community to come to the Balor Theatre on Saturday and Sunday night to enjoy the show.
