LAST night was the second week of reality tv show Dancing with the Stars, and Mickey Joe Harte, together with his professional dance partner Daniela Roze, danced the jive to ‘Mickey’ by Toni Basil.
“But I didn’t choose the song” laughed Mickey Joe in a pre-dance video clip.
Their performance was fun and lively, with the two playing the characters of university students at a basketball game, Mickey Joe as the star and Daniela as his cheerleader.
They certainly looked the part with Mickey Joe kitted out in a red and white varsity jacket toting a basketball, and Daniela in a matching cheerleader outfit, complete with pom poms, which she pumped with gusto throughout, and which ended up in the lap of judge Brian Redmond at the end.
Who knew you could get this creative with the jive?
But did he blow the mind of the judges? Unfortunately not quite. They gave him a score of 14 points out of 40, the second lowest score of the night, just ahead of celebrity Kevin Dundon.
Arthur Gourounlian said “I appreciate all your effort but it was a little bit flat. I love you for your energy and enthusiasm though”.
Brian Redmond said Mickey Joe had a brilliant energy but needed to tidy things up.
Karen Byrne, who’s always a friendly face on the judging panel, said it was clear that Mickey Joe was giving 100 per cent but needs more power in the legs.
And Loraine Barry said “This is definitely your song but I don’t think it’s your night. You need to knuckle down, come back next week and blow us away”.
But it’s not all down to the judges, and in the court of public opinion, Mickey Joe is proving popular.
One tweeter said “Ah Mickey Joe brings a bit of craic to the dancefloor. He’ll definitely improve as time goes on”.
Someone else on X said “Mickey Joe bringing wild dad energy and I’m all here for it”.
Cumulatively Mickey Joe now has a score of 30 points and is in second last position overall.
Next week one of the celebrities will be going home, so to make sure that’s not our Mickey Joe, text Mickey to 53125.
Danny O’Carroll, our adopted Donegal son, topped the scoreboard last night with the highest score of the season so far, a massive 36 points, and is third position overall. He danced the Charlestown expertly and was fantastic to watch.
