Heroin man jailed for ten years

Bernard Alcorn of 17 Cluain Ard, Letterkenny, pleaded guilty at Cavan Circuit Court to Section 15A Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977/84 offence for the sale or supply of heroin on April 22, 2010 at Stradone, Cavan.  

Judge John O’ Hagan said there was no mitigating circumstances in this case. He was aware that Alcorn received a two- year sentence at Letterkenny Circuit Court on February 10 for possession of heroin for sale and supply.
For the Section 15a offence Judge Hagan stated that his hands were tied. There was no co-operation with Gardai from Alcorn,

The Court heard Alcorn had left Letterkenny on April 22, 2010 to collect heroin in Dublin.
Members of the Drugs Unit at Letterkenny had followed him, assisted by Drugs officers in Cavan and Monaghan. At 7pm on Alcorn was observed at the Lavey Inn, Stradone, Cavan removing items from his van.

As Gardai approached he was observed throwing a bag into nearby shrubbery. The bag was recovered and contained €18,790 worth of heroin.
Alcorn was arrested and detained at Cavan Garda Station. He did not co-operate with the Gardai. He was subsequently charged with Possession of drugs for sale or supply

The Court heard from investigating Gardai that Alcorn had 38 previous convictions, including Possession of Drugs for Sale/Supply (4), Numerous RTA Offences, Burglary, Theft, Public Order and Assault.
