HEROIN is fast taking a firm grip in Donegal. Some areas are now reporting a worrying surge in drugs of all types including serious Class A drugs such as heroin and cocaine.
With garda resources stretched there are fears the forces of law and order are not getting on top of the problem.
Yesterday (Thursday) the Mayor of Letterkenny called on the Minister for Justice to tackle the growing drugs crisis in Donegal or ‘rue the consequences’.
He called for a dedicated drugs unit. A court was told recently that heroin usage was on the increase in Letterkenny.
Bernard Alcorn (29) of 110 Meadowbank Park, Letterkenny, told Gardai that the incidence of heroin in Letterkenny was on the rise each week but he did not know how many people were using the drug.
Councillor Gerry McMonagle said there has been a ‘worrying rise’ in the availability of Class A drugs such as heroin in parts of the county, including Letterkenny and if was not stamped out would present serious consequences for communities.
However, with a reshuffle of garda resources due to cutbacks and retirements there are growing fears the drugs unit will lack resources to tackle the issue.
