A LETTERKENNY family who were left shaken after an explosion tore through their home last week have offered their grateful thanks to all who helped during the shocking incident.
Last Tuesday, shortly before 10pm, a fire broke out after an explosion at the home of Karima and Patrick Sweeney in the Ballymacool area of Letterkenny.
They say the brave actions of one of their neighbours – described as a hero – helped ensure the fire was contained.
Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the incident and two people were treated by ambulance personnel at the scene for what gardaí said were non-life-threatening injuries.
Describing the event as one of the most difficult moments of her life, Ms Sweeney has expressed her gratitude to all who offered their help.
“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the hero Oliver, my neighbour, who risked his life and managed to contain the fire that
started after the explosion,” she said.
“Without his quick action, the fire would have spread throughout the house.
“I’d also like to thank the kind lady who took my child to safety.”
Ms Sweeney continued by thanking all her neighbours in Ballymacool who helped and supported her family following the
incident.
She also thanked the paramedics, firefighters and garda officers for their hard work and for taking care of her family at the scene.
“I’m deeply grateful to everyone who came to offer their help and support during one of the most difficult moments of my life,” Ms Sweeney continued.
“Your help, support and prayers mean more than words can express.
“Thank you feels too small to convey the gratitude I have for all of you during this tough time,” she said.
Meanwhile, a garda spokesperson told the Donegal News that their enquiries are ongoing.
