Heritage funding for Milford

MILFORD & District Resource Centre welcomed the news that their application to the Heritage Council’s Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2023 was successful, securing €16,300 towards a conservation plan and feasibility study for the old Reformed Presbyterian Church building on the Kilmacrenan Road in Milford.

The building, which was gifted by the reformed Presbyterian congregation in the town to the community late last year, is in need of significant refurbishment to save it from ruin and to ensure it is preserved for future generations.

Declan Meehan, manager of Milford & District Resource Centre welcomed the news.

“We are delighted to have been able to secure this first batch of funding for this project just five months after receiving the building from our friends in the reformed Presbyterian church. This funding will result in a conservation plan and feasibility study which will explore a reimagined purpose for the building as a community hub for the whole community, while preserving the structure and character of the church as an important part of Milford’s built heritage,” he said.

Milford & District Resource Centre intend to apply for capital funding later in the year and having these comprehensive pieces of work done in advance of that will strengthen their ability to secure substantial investment to refurbish the old church. Declan said he is very excited about the potential this building has for the community in Milford.

“This funding is the first step on an exciting journey which will explore a new role for the church building in the heart of the community.

“We look forward to involving the public in that journey through a consultation as part of the feasibility study, ensuring everyone will have an opportunity to have their say on the building’s future,” he said.
